![]() ![]() The oscillation between formal and very informal language. Still, there are tons of little details that are going to feel familiar to a HS fan. It is also stuffed references to a hundred other fandoms and internet communities that I don’t know well enough to recognise (like Kingdom Hearts and Animorphs), and references of a high literary nature (including Lolita and Gormenghast and so much of the Bible.) To say that The Locked Tomb series is stuffed with Homestuck references would be true, but also a bit unfair. She has a whole conversation with Rose apparently in crisis over whether she is in control of herself, or simply being puppeted by the alpha timeline and the voices of the dead. This isn’t even getting into the whole “being at the absolute bottom of the hemospectrum her whole life” thing. Even her desire to break things post-death seems like an attempt to exert literally just any influence whatsoever on her environment, because as a ghost she’s invisible and intangible. Droog tries to give input as her exile? She tells him to fuck off. Equius tries to take the decision away from her about how she should feel about him? She rips her heart out and starts smacking him around. ![]() But the more she breaks out of that depression, the more she meets any attempt on her agency kicking and screaming. And for a while she goes along with it relatively complacently, seemingly in a sort of depression. From the first time we see her, she has voices in her head telling her what the timeline has in store for her, and what she has to do to make everything happen the correct way. Aradia also faces a lot of attempts on her agency. ![]()
